Space Reach

By Jo Phillips

We want to reach for the stars, metaphorically and physically but sadly not all of us can be astronauts. The magic of looking up into the night sky seeing twinkling shining stars and a bright moon on a clear night not just reminds us of our humble humanness but also our greatest human feats for one, making it into outer space and onto the moon. Watch brand Swatch goes to the starts and back with their latest new space collection inspired by NASA. Read More in Space Reach Here.

The brand’s latest collection taps into a feeling; an emotion inspiring people to dream big. For each and every one of us to create their unique universe and excel within our own time on this, our planet, Earth.

In 1996, Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier wore the Swatch Access To Space – SKZ100 as he boarded the Columbia Space Shuttle on a mission to release an Italian satellite. The watch worn during this extraordinary voyage was gifted to Mr. Nicolas G. Hayek ( co-founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board of The Swatch Group,) and is still exhibited in the Planet Swatch museum. And so the Space Swatch story continues.

Fuelled by a passion for innovation, the Swatch Space Collection celebrates NASA and reveals the next chapter of the new BIOCERAMIC story. Two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-sourced plastic, BIOCERAMIC boasts a silk-like touch, as well as being extremely resilient.

The five watch piece collections consist:-

The BIG BOLD CHRONO EXTRA VEHICULAR looks to the iconic white spacesuit for inspiration. First worn in 1983 by NASA astronauts Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson, the  white suits shield astronauts from the sun’s radiation. The orange Advanced Crew Escape Suit, that is also known as the Pumpkin Suit, inspires the BIG BOLD CHRONOLAUNCH.  The bright orange colour of the watch mirrors the highly visible suits worn by astronauts for the ascent into space. The BIG BOLD JUMPSUIT echoes the everyday go-to blue jumpsuits astronauts wear for press conferences or working in the NASA facility.

The chrono (white and orange) features a 47mm BIOCERAMIC case and a bio-sourced plastic glass. The chrono timer is not set to the usual full hour marker but ten seconds prior and highlighted in red as a nod to the final countdown to liftoff. The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock  alongside two pushers, while the red and blue strap loops, hands with a Swatch glow and NASA logo complete the design. The blue watch features a 47mm BIOCERAMIC case and a bio-sourced plastic glass. The crown is positioned at 2 o’clock, while the white strap loops, hands with Swatch glow and NASA logo complete the design.

Rounding up the Swatch Space Collection is TAKE ME TO THE  MOON ‘GENT’ with a transparent case, and SPACE RACE ‘NEW GENT’ with a mirror-effect silver-coloured dial.
