The Power and Beauty of Perfumed Growth
By Jo Phillips
Here is a strange number to throw out at you. 248. In terms of years, it is the time it takes for the drawf planet Pluto to orbit the sun. That means it moves slowly and does not fully obit in everyone’s lifetime. Here is a slightly weird fact too. It was named by an 11-year-old girl in 1930. Venetia Burney who lived in Oxford, England, suggested to her grandfather that the discovery be named after the Roman God of the underworld. Yet in more mystical terms it represents transformation, and rebirth It is associated with themes of power, control, sexuality, and the subconscious. Now add to this Aquarius, the symbol of the water bearer, believed to represent the gifts of truth and pure intentions, excitingly these two have met up. Yet what does the meeting of these two have to do with delicious scent? Find out more in The Power and Beauty of Perfumed Growth
Since the end of January 2024, the planet Pluto left Capricorn and made its way to Aquarius. Why should we even care? This particular positioning and timing highlights what the energy for the next two decades will be. How our world moves forward and how our planet shapes up. You may not see it yet but the new period will bring about an era filled with supportive collaborations where opportunities, and connections with a turn of events that support a more altruistic theme of life becoming of value to us.
Looking around us with wars, fires, and earthquakes it may seem far-fetched to say change is here, or even coming. Yet with endings comes new beginnings. What we are talking about here is the ideals of Transformation. But look around, for quite a few years now there have been creators and peacemakers quietly changing how we do things, to make our universe a better place for all.
Change rarely comes from the boardroom, men in suits or big business. It usually comes from individuals who see a new way forward, a fairer way, a kinder way.
Take, for example, perfumer Amy Christiansen, a passionate advocate for social change and sustainability, and a perfume lover who brought a fusion to these beliefs when she created scent house, Sana Jardin; a fragrance brand that set new boundaries.
Starting out with a love of flora and its ability to heal, uplift and transform and having had a background in philanthropy, Amy saw an opportunity to combine her love for fragrances with her commitment to the environment and empowerment of others. Amy saw this scented opportunity to combine her love for fragrances with her commitment to empowering marginalized communities.
A pioneer in sustainable and socially responsible her perfume house works with female harvesters in Morocco, providing them with opportunities for economic independence through entrepreneurial programs. Once the flowers are picked for the season, she has built other structures for making a living outside of the picking season meaning all-year-round employment for these women, instead of just seasonal.
This year, Sana Jardin also launched a mini-accelerator programme with a long-term partner, Nest. The programme will support five artisanal female-led cooperatives in Morocco and includes education, training, and peer-to-peer engagement, in addition to financial grants to help drive business growth with access to international luxury markets.
Now going back to the beginning of this piece discussing the shift of Pluto into Aquarius, and this new energy, this new healing, transformation, and rebirth brought about by planetary movement, we can see how transformation can occur in everyday lives.
Also how utilising the power of plants brings about a unique olfactory experience, one that resonates with cosmic energies and inspires a sense of profound connection with the universe.
Think of it as a catalysing and transformative rebellion, one that is at the very heart of Sana Jardin’s Alchemy of Energy platform. Because that is how this house looks at fragrance as perfumed power.
The latest scent in the collection is, of course, named after this majestic shift. ‘Air of Aquarius’ is a captivating unisex fragrance that serves as a spiritual purifier, releasing emotional barriers and fostering deep meditation.
Not many of us have been able to go to space and visit the planets let alone smell them but those that have, talk of a smell of searingly hot metals, burning, even gunpowder but in the more sensual world of perfume, the scent of our universe it’s far more lofty, shimmery, and uplifting.
So this stunning new scent the Air of Aquarius EDP opens with bright vibrant Lemon Oil ( Spain LMR- who produce natural ingredients for Perfumes) followed by different facets of citrus via sweet tangy lively Tangerine Heart LMR, and a third accent of citrus from Green soft-bitterness, citrus of Petitgrain (Bigarade Oil Tunisia LMR) This gives a fuller more complex citrus burst at the top that is vibrant yet nuanced. It says ‘wake up and feel alive’, but with an effervescent hug rather than an explosive feeling.
Its heart becomes a celebration of herbaceous fauna. Lavender Oil (France LMR), sits with her gentle caress, her many facets that include herbal, evergreen, powdery, and slightly sweet that meld in perfection with the fresh wood herbaceous refreshing Rosemary Oil (North Africa LMR) and a final delicious harmony of floral and citrus via Neroli Oil Tunisia LMR, that also unites the heart to the top of the fragrance.
To bring it to rest and last and to wrap up the perfume, its base is made of Musk and Ambroxan for an ambery scent with notes of wood, cream, and musk, echoing the soft yet animalistic nature of the skin.
This combination is not just captivating, it is delicious and desirable yet serves as a spiritual purifier, releasing emotional barriers and fostering deep meditation. The lemon is a ‘cleaner’ in the perfume as the flower is known for its spiritual cleansing properties and it enhances mental focus. As does Rosemary which is known to aid concentration and spiritual purification.
